Built From Love for a Place, Not a Business Plan
Down South Villa began as a personal obsession with Galle—its history, its beauty, its ability to slow the world down—and became a home we opened to those who feel the same.

The Beginning
How a Colonial House Became a Calling
The first time the founders of Down South Villa walked through the arched doorway of what would become the property, it was in a state of beautiful disrepair. The plaster was flaking, the garden had swallowed the pathways, and a chandelier of spider silk hung where a ceiling rose had once been. They saw none of that. They saw the bones—the thick Dutch colonial walls, the high shuttered windows made for sea air, the courtyard that would hold candlelight like a cupped palm.
What followed was two years of restoration guided not by a developer's eye but by a conservationist's conscience. Local craftspeople were engaged at every stage—the terrazzo tilework in the bathrooms, the handwoven linens, the antique teak doors sourced from estate sales across the south coast. Nothing was imported from a catalogue. Every detail was debated, chosen, and installed by hands that understood what the house deserved.
Down South Villa opened quietly in 2017. There was no press release. The first guests were friends of friends who had heard something about a house in the Fort. They left notes on the kitchen table that the owners still keep. That spirit—intimate, personal, held in the hands of those who care deeply—has never changed.

04 Principles
What Guides Us
The principles that shape every decision at Down South Villa.
- 01
Owner-Curated Always
Every element of the villa—from the art on the walls to the wine in the cellar—is chosen by the founders themselves. This is never outsourced, and it shows.
- 02
Heritage, Not Décor
The colonial architecture and local craft in this house are living history, not aesthetic choices. We treat Galle's cultural fabric with the reverence it has earned.
- 03
Community Stewardship
We work exclusively with local artisans, producers, and guides—ensuring that your visit meaningfully benefits the community whose home you are sharing.
- 04
Hospitality as Craft
We refuse to let service become transactional. Every interaction—from the first email to the farewell tuk-tuk—is treated as an opportunity to exceed what you hoped for.
